Final Blog Post

What they don’t understand about women is that they represent so many things like strong, wise, beautiful, loving caring, unique, etc. A woman can be so many things but you try to sum it all u you can’t.  My grandmother is my inspiration; today as I sit down and think about what kind of woman my grandmother was I think of all of these plus more. She was like a word search every time you look at her you see something different. The closest thing I can compare her to is a word search because she is so many things in one.

My grandmother was also kind, wise, religious  beautiful, and a great chief  She raised 11 kids and many of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. My grandmother helped anyone that was in need, she even helped take care of her elderly neighbor until she passed away. She was a great chief  everyone loved her cooking. My grandmother was a strong phenomenal woman and she inspires me to be a better person.

A woman is a beautiful gift.
A woman is a symbol of quality.
A woman is a central figure of family.
A woman stands for her poise though there is doubt.
Woman are strong and remarkable
Yes, we've hurt and yes we've cried
But woman we,re strong, brave, and alive.

I decided to revise this poem because I didn't have an academic source when I wrote it. i searched everyday for a source that had anything to do with my topic and I finally found one by the time I got to my third mini project that kind of relates to my topic. It talks about misrepresentation and the pressures that society puts on black woman about how they should look. Then I started to think of my grandmother my grandmothers advise and how she always told the woman in our family that we are all beautiful and we shouldn't think that we have to look like the women that we see in the media. She reminded me that women are so much more.

This is my 3rd mini project and it's also my favorite.

I am women
Full figured
My Face oval shaped
Unperfect in many ways
I am weak, I am strong
I am quiet, I am loud
I have rough edges that need to be smoothed out with love
I am a woman

I am
A woman of confidence
A woman of dignity,
Worthy of your respect.
I've got no fear,
as you strike me you strike a stone,
i'm a woman of hope,
with no slope nor soapy feels...

As I was looking on the internet I came across an article written by Maya A. Poran called The Politics of Protection: Body Image, Social Pressures, and the Misrepresentation of Young Black Women. It basically talks about the idea of “body image issues” and the pressure put on young black women today. While I read this article it reminded me of the idea of a strong confident woman and i feel more of these young women should be more strong and confident and not change themselves or give in to the pressures of society. As I grew up I used to want to look like the other girls and my big sister always told me to always want to be myself and not other people and I thank her for that. I believe more young women need to see more examples of a strong woman.

This is my second mini project.

Woman fight
Now this woman's pride
lies in her tears
Tears of happiness or
Those of sorrow.
Woman's pride

A remarkable woman
A brave woman
she is strong and she protects me
In every man’s success,
There is a woman behind
Without woman
There is no man
Still we are
Torturing them.

A Woman is the beginning
The middle and end of society
Woman is the miracle of creation
Give power to that woman

I know a woman
And that woman is you

After a couple weeks of searching for sources i finally found one that I was interested in and that I could use, it is a blog by Becca Cross. In the beginning she talked about a movie that she watched and it talked about the negative image of woman and how it affects younger generations, after that she talked about how the media basically attacked Hillary Clinton for looking old when everyone just found out that her husband cheated on her. It made me realize that a lot of the media often criticize women for the way the look and I feel it makes younger women feel that they have to look a certain way in order to be accepted in society. In this poem I basically wanted to say that women should be strong because they are special, even if society sometimes makes them feel like they are not. This is important and worth talking about because the media affects the younger generations opinions and how they see themselves and I believe they should see more positive images of a strong woman.

Blog Post 10

Last week my first mini project didn't really turn out as good as I want it to, so I spent all week looking for different sources and wondering if I should change my topic until I came across an interesting blog. The log basically talked about the bad images of women in the media and I decided to stick with my topic. This week I decided to write a new found poem; a better one than the last time.

Blog post 9

This week I thought a lot about my inquiry project and the mini projects we have to do. I had a idea of what I wanted to do but I wasn't really sure about it after a meeting that I had with Lacy and looking at sources, and spending the weekend with my family it helped give me a greater understanding of the project and it inspired me. I want to talk about the representation of a strong woman and the idea of what a strong woman is because my family is full of strong women. I'm not finished with my found poem poem but I hope it turns out really good.

blog post 8

This week we met with the high school students from forest view. While we met with them we talked about college readiness and participated in activities. My favorite activity was when we drew how we see a list of things and write in our day book about what we noticed in some of the pictures, I thought it was really funny how some student viewed college. Someone drew a picture of of a beer keg liked they see it as a place to party all of the time. I feel like if that person comes to college then they will see what college is really like, it may be fun but its also a lot of hard work. There is a lot more to life than partying, but overall I really enjoyed talking to the students and I wish we could do another activity with them.

Blog Post 7

This week in class we talked about what we were going to be working on for the rest of the semester, which is our inquiry projects. At first I was like I really don't want to do this, I sat there like I have no idea what I wanted to do my project on or how I was going to do it. As Lacy continued to talk about it, I started to like it. It seems like it would be fun working on it because I get to do what we want. We were told to divide our paper into four squares and write down things we read or went over in class and I decided to talk about representation  I look forward to starting this project and talking more about it in class.

Blog Post 6

This week we talked looked at a picture and talked about college readiness. We were asked to list some of the things we noticed in the picture and draw a picture of  how we see college readiness. This is what I drew

The picture we looked at was from the point of view of testing companies. I feel like it could've been better represented if it was from the point of view of a current student. i feel that getting ready for college starts your 8th grade year because those grades determines what classes you take your freshman year in high school. College readiness is more than just taking test, colleges don't want a person that can pass a test, they want a well rounded student. Colleges want a student that has good grades but is also involved in extracurricular activities. In my opinion this image is a bad example of college readiness.

An activity we did in class was look at a list of representations of schooling and learning in popular culture that the class came up with. The list had movies, books, TV, videos, games, comics, advertisements, and other stuff. We had to write about what was being represented and give an example so I chose to write about success and how it represented. The list had many examples of success but my favorite example was the movie "Lean On Me." I chose it because it is one of my favorite movies, and it represent success very well. It basically about a bad school in NJ and a principals struggle to turn things around and he was very successful at it. His main goal was to make a change and he did, and made an impact in everyone's lives.

Here is the link to the movie trailer:

This week in class we talked about representation. I think this is really interesting topic because I feel like representation helps us learn. In the picture we saw there were many examples of representation, and we had to pick One of the examples was women, I think that women represent a lot of things in our culture. Women can do so many things in today's society, way more than in the past. One of the most important roles  I think women represent is leaders, for example Michelle Obama, she represents so many things and being a leader is a big one. I look forward to looking more into this topic.

Blog Post 3

This week in class we read a poem for WID called "Schoolsville". The poem was really intesting to me and it made me think about what he was talking about. At first I thought I knew what he was talking about then as the poem went on I was a little confused with the last paragraphs. Were the students visiting him or were they asking for advice. Even though the poem confused me in the end I still enjoyed reading it.
