Blog Post 5

An activity we did in class was look at a list of representations of schooling and learning in popular culture that the class came up with. The list had movies, books, TV, videos, games, comics, advertisements, and other stuff. We had to write about what was being represented and give an example so I chose to write about success and how it represented. The list had many examples of success but my favorite example was the movie "Lean On Me." I chose it because it is one of my favorite movies, and it represent success very well. It basically about a bad school in NJ and a principals struggle to turn things around and he was very successful at it. His main goal was to make a change and he did, and made an impact in everyone's lives.

Here is the link to the movie trailer:

  1. Although I have never seen this movie, from what is said in your post, it reminds me a lot of Freedom Writers which is the book I chose to read. It illustrates the image of a hero, being the teacher, helping the people in need of help, being the students. I think they are both perfect examples of heroes and master and little narratives.

  2. I also chose to read Freedom Writers. This movie does have a lot in common with the Freedom Writers movie. It shows how the teacher and principal try and change their schools by reaching out to the students.

  3. This does seem a lot like freedom writers, but older and on a slightly bigger scale and by a different method. I did not know what this movie was until this blog post, but now I want to go and see the movie. It seems like a very interesting and inspiring story. I will add this to my must watch list.
